In Alberta, after World War I, it set up "outpost hospitals" for the brides and families of soldier-settlers in the outlying reaches of the province . . . The Outpost Hospital of those days was no figure of speech. It was a strategically located unit, with four to six beds for men and women patients, plus a miniature maternity ward full of clothes-basket­cribs for the new arrivals.
